Bjork Launches Virtual Reality Exhibition

Björk is one to push the envelope when it comes to technology and immersive experiences, including her multimedia approach to 2011's Biophilia and more recently having released her "Stonemilker" video from last year's Vunicura as a virtual reality app. For her latest foray into virtual reality, the singer is bringing her native Iceland to fans during her Björk Digital exhibition, which launches on Friday in Sydney, Australia.

During the event, Björk will premiere her fourth virtual reality video from her personal, and devastatingly stunning Vulnicura, which chronicles the dissolution of her longtime relationship. "[The exhibition] is a further step into completing the full Vulnicura VR album, which will come out soon," she said in a statement on her website. "I feel the chronological narrative of the album is ideal for the private circus virtual reality is: a theatre able to capture the emotional landscape of it."

The artist shared a video preview via Instagram of what attendees can expect from the VR imaging. The silent clip slowly moves through a desolate, yet majestic Icelandic landscape while drawn, squiggly lines form to make letters and shapes as the camera zooms in on a large, dark sculpture of a person splayed across it that at first glance simply looks like a rock in the field.

In her statement, she discusses the the interactive aspect of the exhibit, where "folks can watch Vulnicura in VR and also I've brought the instruments from Biophilia that guests can try out with iPads."

As Variety reports, Björk Digital currently houses four VR music videos featuring Vulnicura songs, but there will be an additional five clips added to the mix. Current attendees will experience it via 80 Gear VR headsets. The piece has also been ported to HTC Vive, which boasts full room tracking and eventually it will be made available for download. The exhibit will travel to Tokyo, London, Paris and Houston in the coming months.

Björk will be in attendance at the launch event on Friday. "The frustrated musicologist in me will air out some odd finds and DJ for guests at the opening," she said.
