Mumford & Sons multi-instrumentalist Ben Lovett and a collection of all-star musicians will collaborate with amateur songwriters on a new album titled Metamorphoses that will aim to raise awareness to fight extreme poverty. Lovett announced the project at this weekend's Global Citizen Festival, with Communion Records and the Global Poverty Project partnering with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on the album.
For Metamorphoses, Lovett and his handpicked group of as-yet-announced performers will put music to chosen submissions entered through the Global Citizen site. "Send in your lyrics, your words, your thoughts … an old school speech, a wedding vow, anything that feels important to you," Lovett said in a video that premiered at the Global Citizen fest. "Musicians from all over the world are gonna help bring your words to life through music."
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Lovett said of the project, "Collaborating and working on unique creative projects has been a huge part of my life. Music is everything to me, and the power of it to do incredible things and change peoples' lives and sometimes the World is a beautiful by-product of music. I hope to curate a record that stands the test of time and can feel unique and relevant beyond the deadline of those goals in 2030, and beyond!
"The basis of the record will be in the narrative; the stories and words that inspire the music. I see music as a way to elevate a narrative, and the musicians I'll be enlisting to help make this record happen, I trust to do so in a tasteful and masterful way, through whatever genre they might wish to employ. Obviously most of this story is yet to be told, but we are beyond excited by its potential."
Lovett will begin revealing specific artists in the coming months. The deadline to submit words to the Metamorphoses project is January 1st, 2016; the album itself is due out in late 2016. The writers of the submissions used on Metamorphoses will receive credit alongside the musicians involved.
The Chris Martin-curated Global Citizen Festival in New York featured Pearl Jam, Beyoncé, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran.
