Luke Bryan made like the main character in his latest single "Hunting, Fishing, and Loving Everyday" on Friday, June 3rd, making an early-morning appearance on the Today show despite steady rain in downtown New York City.
Good hunters and fishermen know that sometimes they have the best luck when the weather is bad, and that seemed to be the case for Bryan since hundreds of fans braved the elements for his free show, which he noted was one of four in a span of 28 hours and began with a sound check at 5 a.m.
"Hunting and fishing in the rain today!" said the superstar as his band kicked into the opening chords of "HFLE." Dressed in a form-fitting jeans-and denim-jacket combo with his famous black ball cap, Bryan started his ode to country boy pride like he was stalking a 10-pointer, gingerly and deliberately singing each line about windswept meadows and reeling in bass before springing into attack mode for the song's anthemic chorus.
"Thank God He made me this way," he shouted with a smile.
Peppered with foot-stomping references to Bryan's boyhood home in South Georgia, the song is currently sitting inside the Top 5 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. After it came to a roaring, guitar-chopping close a few minutes later, the soggy New York crowd called out for more. Bryan was happy to oblige, offering up "Strip It Down," "I Don't Want this Night to End," and "Play It Again" to round out his four-song set, part of the Today show's Citi Concert Series.
Bryan continues his jam-packed weekend of Kill the Lights tour stops tonight with a show in Atlantic City, N.J., and another tomorrow in Hershey, Penn.
