Hear Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ Groovy Allman Brothers Cover

Sharon Jones performed a funky update of the Allman Brothers' standard "Midnight Rider" in a new video.

The forceful singer works with her usual backing group, the Dap-Kings, which had some musical reinforcements on this occasion, including a pair of trombones, a string section and even a xylophone player. This formidable unit reorganized "Midnight Rider" around a sinuous groove. At the end of the ad, the camera pulls back to reveal Matthew McConaughey enjoying the rendition in his car (a Lincoln).

Greg Allman originally penned "Midnight Rider" with Kim Payne, a roadie for the Allman Brothers. The song first appeared on the band's Idlewild South album in 1970. Allman re-released the song as a solo single in 1973, when it became a top 20 hit. Joe Cocker, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and others have recorded the classic track.

Miss Sharon Jones!, a documentary about the singer opens a theatrical run July 29th.
