Selena Gomez will be executive producing an as-yet-untitled series for Freeform, the network formerly known as ABC Family. As Billboard reports, she will co-produce the series with Aaron Kaplan, though the singer-actress will not star on the show. Gomez's mother, Mandy Teefey, will also be involved in the project.
The drama is touted as a "Latina Empire," and is inspired by Anna Cobarrubias, who is a Los Angeles high school senior. The show is set in a low-income Los Angeles neighborhood and centers on an 18-year old who is "destined for greatness." Cobarrubias will serve as a consultant on the project.
As Deadline reports, Kaplan saw Cobarrubias' speak during the Zimmer Children's Museum Discovery Award Dinner in November, where the teen received a standing ovation after she talked about making a difference in her East LA neighborhood and her drive to exceed society's expectations.
In addition to the Gomez project, Freeform will also air another artist-related project, a Kaplan-produced comedy starring Nicki Minaj that is based on the rapper's childhood.
This isn't the only upcoming project where Gomez will sit in the executive producer's seat. The former Disney Channel star will again team with her mom to co-produce Netflix's forthcoming series 13 Reasons Why, which is based on the young adult novel.
In January, Gomez was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, where she performed three of her Revival singles. The singer will embark on her North American Revival tour next month. She kicks things off in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay on May 6th and wraps this leg of the tour on July 11th in Quebec City, Canada, at The Festival D'ete de Quebec.
