See 'Hamilton' Cast Pay Tribute to Prince With 'Let's Go Crazy'

The cast of Hamilton gave a rousing tribute to Prince Thursday night, performing "Let's Go Crazy" after the performance of the Broadway show. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show's creator, had tweeted earlier, "Gutted. Mourning with you," after initial rumors of the performer's death. Later, after Prince was confirmed dead at the age of 57, Miranda added, "Step away from your computer. Walk around, blast some Prince. It's the only thing that has saved my day, it may save yours."

Although the performance may have appeared spontaneous to the audience members in attendance, it turns out the show's musical director, Alex Lacamoire, had spent the day working on it with the cast. Lacamoire released a backstage video of the rehearsal process on Twitter., which was also shared by cast member Gregory Haney.

Nearby at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, the cast of The Color Purple also showed their love for Prince, with the show's cast performing a stunning rendition of "Purple Rain." Jennifer Hudson, who plays Shug Avery in the production through early May, and Cynthia Erivo, who stars as Celie, started things off as the audience subsequently joined in. Before beginning her belting, Hudson said, "His music will live on and he will live with his music, so we want to keep him alive today!"
