Rihanna Set to Star in New Peter Berg Documentary

Filmmaker Peter Berg will direct a new documentary about Rihanna styled after D.A. Pennebaker's famous 1967 Bob Dylan film, Don't Look Back, Deadline reports.

The doc will be one of the first from Berg's new non-scripted production company, Film 45 (the logical offshoot of his film/TV company, Film 44). Berg described the as-yet-untitled movie as an "unfiltered look into Rihanna's life and how she's ascended to become a global icon."

Berg added that he was interested in exploring "a young artist at the top of her professional field" and said the movie would be "much more a character study than a music film."

Berg notably gave Rihanna her first major acting role in his 2012 film, Battleship. His other directorial credits include Friday Night Lights — he also worked extensively on the TV show — Hancock, Lone Survivor and the upcoming Deepwater Horizon.

While Friday Night LightsLone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon (about the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Meixco) are all based on true events, Berg has made several inroads into actual documentary filmmaking. He directed the ESPN 30 for 30 episode "Kings Ransom," about the trade that sent hockey great Wayne Gretzky to Los Angeles, and has been working on two HBO Sports series, On Freddie Roach and State of Play, with his Film 45 partner, producer Matthew Goldberg.

As for Rihanna, the pop star surprise-released her eighth album, Anti, in January after teasing it for much of 2015. At the end of February, she kicked off her Anti world tour with opener Travis Scott; the trek's North American leg will continue through May 18th.
