Hear Portishead's Devastating, Foreboding Cover of ABBA's 'SOS'

Portishead have turned in a threadbare cover of ABBA's infectious hit "SOS," marking their first new recording since 2009's charity single, "Chase the Tear."

Singer Beth Gibbons delivers a serene vocal performance that remains faithful to the song's original melody, but synths and guttural bass swells transform ABBA's melancholy disco. Portishead's rendition gives the Seventies hit an eerie, modern context.

Portishead recorded "SOS" for Ben Wheatley's new movie, High-Rise. The film, out May 13th, is an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's 1975 novel of the same name about class tensions in a luxury apartment complex that turn violent starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Elisabeth Moss.

In 2014, Portishead's Adrian Utley told The Quietus the group was making time to record the long-awaited follow-up to 2008's Third. No official statement on a new Portishead album has been made.
