Hear Chris Cornell's Rousing 'Stay With Me Baby' Cover for 'Vinyl'

HBO's Vinyl season one comes to a close on Sunday and the Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger-helmed sex, drugs and rock & roll biz television show seems to be going out on a high note, at least as far as some characters' drug-addled minds are concerned and musically as well. Case in point: the show featured Chris Cornell's rousing cover of "Stay With Me Baby" during last Sunday's penultimate episode. Hear Cornell's cover above, which Vulture premiered.

Throughout Vinyl's first season, myriad artists have been tapped to cover rock blasts from the pasts, including Iggy Pop, Julian Casablancas, the Arcs and the Kills' Alison Mosshart, with their covers being featured on episodes and in mini-soundtracks. 

While a range of artists, including Bob Dylan, Mary J. Blige, Janis Joplin and Bette Midler have put their spin on "Stay With Me Baby" over the years, Cornell's version taps into Terry Reid's approach, with a bluesy, soulful style more indicative of Cornell's solo work than Soundgarden. 

"I was very honored to be asked to record a version of 'Stay With Me Baby' for Vinyl," Cornell told Vulture. "I get to pay tribute to Terry Reid, whose version of the song has been a favorite of mine for many years, and be included on a great soundtrack with an amazing group of artists." 

The soundtrack is called Vinyl: Music From the HBO Series – The Essentials: Best of Season 1 will be released on Friday, and as The Wall Street Journal points out, it will combine previously released tracks as well as a handful of unreleased songs.
