Ty Segall Wanders Through the Grotesque in 'Emotional Mugger' Short

Garage rock hero Ty Segall wanders through a dystopian Los Angeles filled with blood-sucking cops and phone-faced drones in the surreal short film for his new album, Emotional Mugger.

Directed by frequent collaborator Matt Yoka, the film opens with Segall playing an unsuspecting everyman who stumbles across a cop bringing a crook to his knees then gruesomely draining his blood. Segall walks away from the brutal scene literally scarred, a mark cutting across his jaw.

Things get weirder when, later that night, a prostitute picks up Segall, takes him to a seedy motel and makes him watch her inject a blue serum into her leg that causes her to go into ecstatic fits. An even more disfigured Segall departs the room and stumbles around Hollywood until a pair of peppy people with iPhones covering their eyes scoop him up and take him to a wine and cheese party. After joining the partygoers as they gaze at a bizarre entertainment globe, Segall walks away and makes his way to the beach where — looking like a haunted house ghoul — he quietly watches the tranquil surf from the sand.

The Emotional Mugger short boasts a handful of cuts from Segall's new album that were remixed specifically for the film by producer, F. Bermudez.

Emotional Mugger, Segall's eighth solo album, arrived in January via Drag City, and follows 2014's Manipulator. The rocker is set to kick off a North American tour in support of Emotional Mugger on February 17th at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix.
